The Celtic Lounge Review & Penarth Pier (Penarth)

View in Google+ Album
Despite living in Penarth for the past 18 months, I hardly know it or even what it has to offer.
Don't get me wrong, I know the train stations and my walk home like the back of my hand, but I'd gotten into the routine of only doing those routes and never taking the time to really appreciate my lovely town, 'The Garden by the Sea'.

With this world of unknown on my doorstep, I took the opportunity to venture out into the wonders of Penarth with a very good friend of mine and some cameras in tow! (...And a tripod, some lenses, a few filters.. Eish, taking pictures is hard work!)

Ed and I set off just near the barrage at about midday, luckily we checked the tide times otherwise we could have ended up going for a swim in the channel instead! We walked around the headland, on the beach, which was pretty rocky but walkable. Just. Despite the wet weather recently, today the sun played us a pleasant visit making for an enjoyable wander. We then reached the beautiful Penarth Pier, which has had an enormous amount of work done to it over the last few years, but it's all been worthwhile as it won pier of the year in 2014!

After a brief stop there, we made our way towards Penarth town center to grab some lunch and wait for the sun to set (us photographers love some good mood lighting!) I'd asked on twitter for some suggestions of places to go, and other than the Pier, these places got suggested: The Pilot, Pizza Pronto, Ocho Lounge and Bar 44. In the end we decided to go to the first place which caught our fancy; The Celtic Lounge. However, the suggested places are definitely on my 'to go' list, and if you have any recommendations then feel free to comment below.

This quirky little cafe was absolutely buzzing with customers and energy, and upon entering it was easy to see why! Fresh, homemade cakes on display, a huge variety of sandwiches, salads and pies. Carrot cake, red velvet cake, chocolate fudge cake... Ahh we were in heaven! It was just what the doctor ordered on this crisp January afternoon.

I went for the chicken and bacon salad which came with peppers, red onion and a Caesar dressing. It was delicious. Simple, yet filling and healthy! Well, it made me feel less guilty about indulging in a cake afterwards anyway at least!
I followed my colourful salad with a colourful red velvet cake! I mean, with a 'cake deal' - £2.95 for a cake and a coffee- it would have been rude not to, right?? Don't judge, I know you would have done the same in my situation..

We then headed back to the pier, but not before we had a quick chat with the owners of The Celtic Lounge! Finally we made our way back towards the barrage, which is where our journey ended! It was a super day which really opened my eyes to the sense of community in Penarth. So many little local shops and cafes that cater to every style, and are so welcoming! I'm really looking forward to exploring more of those kind of places, not just in Penarth, but further afield as well.

I think it is so important that we help and support these places, before the mainstream franchises takeover that are unable to offer us the same unique service. So next time you're planning a day out, why not save on some petrol and make the most of the hidden gems close to home.
